[series]: Eyeshield 21
[character]: Sawai "Julie" Juri

[character history / background]: (And here's where I lament how woefully lacking Julie's Wikipedia article is.)

Even in the most trite teenage novels, there's usually something to be gained, some kind of sappy 'every cloud has a silver lining'-esque lesson to be taken away. And, objectively, the life that Sawai Juri has lived is pretty much just that-- she's got two parents, lives just outside the busiest part of the city, does decently in school. She's received love letters in her school locker, is familiar with most of the songs on the local karaoke bar's list, and goes to her occasional goukon (although only when her friends need another chick to even out the numbers). There's even the stereotypical childhood friend who's always seen trailing by her heels. All the ingredients for a nice chick flick.

However, no matter how many times analyzes her life (and, believe me, teenagers tend to do so more than adults might imagine-- the whole teenage identity crisis thing), Julie can sum most of her life's lessons in one short sentence.

Sasaki Koutarou is not as smart as he would have others believe.

And she's been spending practically all of her years, ever since they met as young children, trying to prevent his stupidity from kicking him in the proverbial rear. Looking back, some of her actions were probably more detrimental than anything else, simply due to the fact that when Koutarou didn't fail, his ego tended to grow instead--when she'd finally relented to applying for the managerial position for the Bando Spiders football team in high school, he wouldn't let her live it down for weeks.

The only reason why it hasn't grown to inhuman proportions is probably thanks to the fact that no matter how many times he's asked, she's never agreed to go on a date with him.

It's just an epicly bad idea, and she'll leave it at that.

[character abilities]: Julie's most notable ability is that of keeping her childhood friend Koutarou in line through... well, it's not quite certain what. Probably a combination of criticism, wit, and the hold that she has over his heart (no, really).

Sometimes she falls for those puppy eyes, though. Just a little.

Aside from that, she's pretty good at managing the Bando team. Nothing too spectacular though-- no supernatural abilities, seemingly or otherwise.

[character personality]:

When a girl spends most of her time around men with fairly unhealthy obsessions and odd behaviors, when the phrase "that's smart!" always seems to be applied to the wrong things, it usually results in a little more self-consciousness than the average teenager bothers with.

Perhaps the best way to phrase Julie's personality is that she never fumbles--no pun intended. Years of tolerating Koutarou's random kicking sprees and whims, coupled with months of managing one of the strangest teams in Japan, have tempered Julie's patience and understanding. She's not too patient, mind--sometimes that thwap to the head is just what some of the players need--but Julie does nothing to excess and stands firm in her convictions, while also managing to maintain a fairly good grasp on her emotions. She won't hit Akaba for bringing his guitar to practice, but she will put a stop to the spontaneous songwriting if it's holding up the rest of the team from working on a play. That sort of thing.

Which isn't to say that Julie always opts in favor of the strictly practical. Sometimes, after all, while crying and displaying anger have no positive gains, they certainly help relieve one's shoulders of burdensome weight--after the Bando Spiders had been eliminated from competing in the Christmas Bowl, Julie allowed herself a decent amount of time to brood. No use slowing down her productivity in other areas by leaving her chest tight and the tears unshed.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: After Deimon has worked their way into qualifying to compete in the Christmas Bowl.
